Declined card troubleshooting

Troubleshoot debit and credit card payment errors and failures

Most card payments go through without any issues. When one is declined, it's usually your bank's security settings, and a few quick checks fix most cases.

What to check

What to do

Your card details

Check the card number, expiry date, and security code (CVV)

Your billing details

Enter your name and address exactly as your bank has them.

You have enough funds

Your total includes the order price and the payment fee shown at checkout.

Your card limit allows the payment

Some banks set daily or online spending limits. Check or raise your limit in your banking app.

3D Secure is turned on

Turn it on in your banking app, or ask your bank to do it. Depending on your card, it may be called differently, e.g., Visa Secure or Mastercard Identity Check. Keep your banking app nearby, since you may need to approve the payment there.

International payments are allowed

Turn on international and online payments in your banking app.

Your VPN

Banks can block payments that come from an unexpected location; contact them for more information.

You're using a debit or credit card

Prepaid cards are declined more often. See Prepaid and gift card payments for which ones work.

If your card is still declined

After a decline, we recommend waiting 15-30 minutes before you try again. Several attempts in a row can make your bank block the card for a while.

If it still doesn't work, try another card or a different payment method. For example, if you paid with your card directly, try Apple Pay or Google Pay instead.

Your bank can also tell you the exact reason for the decline, since they can see it on their side, so you can always contact them and receive clarification.
